The treasures of wild berries

15-05-2008

A new report on the treasures of Finnish berries concludes that "Berries are beneficial for human cardiovascular system. Lowering of blood pressure is just one of the positive results of a berry diet... Even a small daily berry ration brings good results". And the more variety there is in the daily intake – the better, since each wild berry is unique not only by its taste, but also by its ingredients which contribute to the human well being.

There are more than 50 kinds of berries growing in Finland. About 20 of them are good for gathering and selling. One of the problems being solved by companies supplying berries to food producers is how to process these gifts of nature without changing not only their taste but also amounts of vitamins and microelements contained in all parts of berries. In the summer of 2007 a record amount of wild berries were gathered in Finland for industrial processing and resale. Among them – 5 thousand tons of blueberries, 5.7 thousand tons of lingonberries, 500 tons of crowberries.
